Yesterday & Today
How it came to be
Sandbriar Farms is the true melding of two
peoples' passion. Kyle grew up in northern
Indiana and a dream became a reality in 1994
when 2 Murray Grey heifers were purchased for a
4-H project. Carole grew up in southeast Georgia
and started showing Herefords at the tender age
of 6.Those 4-H projects were the beginning of
something special and a love that runs deep here
at the farm.
Today the SF program focuses on producing high
quality cattle that will work for the purebred or
commercial producer. Utilizing superior genetics
and management, SF cattle will perform!
A bit about Murray Greys
The Murray Grey breed originated in Australia in the early 20th century along the Murray
River in New South Wales. The first animals were produced by a Shorthorn cow being
bred to an Aberdeen Angus bull. Murray Greys were first imported into the United States
in the early 1970's. Characteristics worth noting are their moderate frame, docile
temperament, calving ease, feed efficiency and carcass quality. The calves of the breed
are small at birth. The cows are good mothers and milk well, and the calves have good
rates of growth. Docility seems to be a genuine asset of the breed both in the herd and in
the feedlot. The cattle are polled. The color of the Murray Grey can be an asset. The
gray is a very practical color that reflects more heat than dark colors. The skin should be
heavily pigmented or dark-colored and this helps keep away certain eye and skin
problems, such as cancer eye and sunburned udders. Murray Grey cattle can range from
"light silver" through various shades of "dun" to black. The dun color may range from light
tan to dark, chocolate brown.
